Hello fellow Warehouse resident,

First of all, congratulations on receiving admission to MIT and choosing to live in the Warehouse!  Here is some information to make your stay as comfortable as possible. However, this letter does not cover everything. There is much more information available on the other pages of this website. If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact your resident assistant (RA).

Each resident has a Warehouse RA.  Your RA will contact you by email over the summer and after you arrive, and will be your contact resource for any questions / concerns you may have while living in the Warehouse.  If you have any questions about anything, it is best to send an email to your RA or an email to warehouse-ras@mit.edu

The Warehouse has wireless Internet. We also have two computers available for your use in the Warehouse. You can use your Kerberos name and password to sign on to any of the Athena computers on campus at MIT.

A lot of MIT websites will require that you use an MIT certificate.   (You should obtain both an MIT CA and an MIT personal certificate.)

Your address here at the Warehouse is:

Name
224 Albany Street
Apt. Number (which you will receive in a mailing from the Housing Office)
Cambridge, MA 02139

You can receive mail by using your room key to open your mailbox located in the front lobby.  The mailboxes are located to the right of the front desk.  You are also able to receive packages here at the Warehouse.

The Warehouse has a laundry room on the ground floor, and you can check its status online. Each resident will be provided with a laundry basket for his or her room.  You may use quarters or MIT Tech Cash to use the laundry machines.  The front desk does not have quarters.

Trash pick-up is in the mornings on most days (except for weekends and holidays). Please do not leave trash after 9 am on Fridays, because it will not be picked up and it will stink up the hallways (instead, use the dumpsters outside).

Recycling should be put into the appropriate bins on each floor.  Large recycling containers are located on each floor.

Quiet hours in the Warehouse are from 10pm – 8am Sunday through Thursday and from 1am to 9am Friday and Saturday.  The Warehouse government asks that you respect these quiet hours by keeping noise at a minimum so that those you live around you can rest and study.  If you have any questions or concerns about this policy please don’t hesitate to contact the Warehouse RA’s.

There is a gym located on the ground floor of the Warehouse. There is also an exercise bike in the study lounge on the first floor. During the summer you will need to get an access key from the front desk to enter the gym.

There are lounges located on each floor for study or recreational use. The lounge on the first floor is home to the Warehouse library, where you may borrow books for any time period that you wish. The televisions on the ground and third floor have Direct TV, and the third floor has a Tivo recording system.

The kitchen, ground floor TV room, Colbert Room (the large multipurpose room on the ground floor), and Media Room may all be reserved for a four hour time period, using the online reservation form. If you plan to serve alcohol at your event you must fill out the additional section on the form when you are reserving the room.  You may also register to serve alcohol to groups of 10 or less on the roof deck, although this area cannot be reserved.  For more information about room reservations and alcohol registration, see the room reservation and alcohol policy pages.

There are many items which you may check out from the front desk.  These items are available to all residents once they have attended an orientation session.  These sessions are offered during August and September, and again during the year if needed.

MIT has a shuttle system for transportation.  More information on routes, discounted T passes (used for the MBTA – to ride the Massachusetts train and bus system) and schedules are available on the MIT Office of Parking and Transportation website.

There are several options for grocery stores around the Warehouse. Shaw’s (also called Star Market)  is located about a quarter of a mile away from the Warehouse. You may check out a cart from the front desk to use for grocery shopping. The MIT Market is an outdoor produce stand set-up by Russo’s on Tuesdays from noon – 6 pm behind Walker Memorial.  Trader Joes and Whole Foods are also within walking distance.

You can use the phone in your room to place or receive on-campus calls. To place outside calls you must activate your phone.

Important phone numbers:
Emergency: 100 [To call for an emergency from an MIT phone you should dial 100, not 911]
Medical Emergency: 3-1311
Campus Police: 3-1212
General Information: 3-4481

For room furnishings, MIT has a student furniture exchange located down the street from the Warehouse. There is also an Ikea store located in Stoughton, MA.

The Warehouse government hopes that you have a safe and comfortable move-in and look forward to meeting you at the upcoming orientation events during the beginning of the semester.
